Argentina meat consumption shifts as poultry surpasses beef

Argentina is experiencing a historic shift in dietary habits as poultry consumption has surpassed beef consumption for the first time. According to reports from IERAL, annual poultry consumption has reached 47 kilograms per capita, slightly exceeding beef consumption, which fell to 46.7 kilograms. This shift is largely driven by rising beef prices, making chicken and pork more accessible alternatives for families.

Egg consumption is also rising, with per capita intake reaching 430 units this year. Additionally, the pork market is seeing significant changes. While domestic pork consumption is hitting record levels, the market is facing intense competition from Brazil. Due to increased production and falling prices in Brazil, the price gap between Argentine and Brazilian pork reached 61.9% in August, driving higher import volumes into Argentina.

Regional data also highlights these trends. In Entre Ríos, the cattle stock has seen a significant reduction, with a decline in beef slaughtering, while pork activity has grown. Consumers are increasingly opting for smaller, more frequent purchases of affordable proteins like chicken and pork rather than large quantities of beef.
