Argentina poultry consumption surpasses beef for the first time

Argentina is experiencing a historic shift in dietary habits as poultry consumption has surpassed beef consumption for the first time. According to reports from IERAL of the Fundación Mediterránea, poultry consumption reached 47 kg per inhabitant between August 2025 and July 2026, slightly edging out beef at 46.7 kg.

This shift is largely driven by economic factors. The price of beef has risen significantly, with one kilogram of beef costing the equivalent of approximately 3.6 kilograms of whole chicken or 1.9 kilograms of pork ribs. Consequently, many households are substituting more expensive beef cuts with more affordable proteins. Pork consumption also reached a record high of 20.1 kg per inhabitant.

Simultaneously, the egg industry is seeing growth. The Argentine Chamber of Poultry Producers and Industrializers (CAPIA) projects that egg consumption will rise to 430 units per inhabitant by 2026, up from 398 in 2025. CAPIA estimates the egg industry's turnover will exceed US$ 2.2 billion and support more than 32,000 direct and indirect jobs.
