Argentina poverty rate rises to 32.3% in first half of 2026 FAST-MOVING

Argentina’s poverty rate rose to 32.3% in the first half of 2026, according to data from the national statistics agency INDEC. This represents a 4.1 percentage point increase from the 28.2% recorded in the second half of 2025, reversing a previous downward trend. The increase affects an estimated 15.5 million people nationwide.

Indigence also climbed to 7.5%, up from 6.3% in the previous semester. The deterioration is attributed to accelerating inflation and the fact that the cost of basic food and essential goods rose faster than household incomes. For example, while per capita household income rose 11.5%, the cost of the basic food basket increased by 21.4%.

Regional disparities remain significant. The Northeast (NEA) region reported the highest poverty rate at 41.5%. Within that region, Gran Resistencia recorded 48.6% poverty, while Concordia saw the highest national rate at 56.2%. Conversely, the City of Buenos Aires maintained the lowest rate at 11.1%.

Among vulnerable demographics, poverty reached 44.5% for children aged 0 to 14. The economic shift has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, while the government maintains that poverty levels remain significantly lower than the 52.9% recorded in the first half of 2024.
