Argentina prepares AySA water utility sale as Colombia warns of energy risks

In Argentina, the government has set September 15 as the deadline to receive bids for the sale of 90% of the shares of Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos (AySA). The company, which serves approximately 15 million people in Buenos Aires and surrounding areas, is being offered under a 30-year concession. The new owner will be required to execute a massive investment plan totaling $15.04 billion to address critical issues, including a 40% physical water loss rate, aging infrastructure, and significant gaps in sewage access.

Meanwhile, in Colombia, energy generators are warning of a potential crisis regarding the national electricity supply. Alejandro Castañeda, president of the Asociación Nacional de Empresas Generadoras (ANDEG), stated that the most significant risk to the electrical system is projected for April 2025, when hydroelectric reservoirs may reach their lowest operational levels due to the El Niño phenomenon. While current reservoir levels are at 79%, the sector plans to use thermal power generation to preserve water levels through the dry season, aiming to sustain the system until rains return in April or May.
