Argentina prepares lineup for World Cup debut against Algeria

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed that goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez is fit for the team’s first match of the 2026 World Cup, set to be played on Tuesday at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium. Scaloni noted that forward Julián Álvarez has recovered from a minor ankle issue and is also available.

In the days leading up to the game, the squad has been experimenting with defensive options after left‑back Nicolás Tagliafico was ruled out with a calf tear. Scaloni has tried a 4‑4‑2 shape featuring Gonzalo Montiel, Cristian Romero, Nicolás Otamendi and Lisandro Martínez, as well as a three‑centre‑back system with Romero as stopper, Otamendi as libero and Martínez on the left, complemented by wing‑backs Giuliano Simeone and Nicolás González. Other possible starters include Nahuel Molina or Facundo Medina at left back, and midfielder Rodrigo De Paul alongside Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister.

Scaloni emphasized the team’s physical readiness, the lack of injuries, and the need to stay calm, recalling Argentina’s experience from Qatar 2022. He also praised Algeria’s speed and quality, warning that the match will be a demanding test for the defending champions.
