Argentina suspends 21,812 disability pensions amid audit

The Argentine government has suspended 21,812 non-contributory disability pensions following an audit that identified potential medical and patrimonial irregularities. Presidential spokesperson Adrián Ravier announced that the National Disability Secretariat revoked precautionary restorations of these benefits due to insufficient medical or socioeconomic documentation to justify their continuity.

Beneficiaries have 30 business days to present supporting documentation, such as updated medical reports or socioeconomic certificates, through the 'Trámites a Distancia' (TAD) platform or local disability offices. The government reported finding several cases of beneficiaries with assets incompatible with the assistance-based nature of the pension, including individuals owning multiple vehicles, multiple properties, or large landholdings.

This administrative action occurs alongside legislative developments. The Chamber of Deputies recently granted a half-sanction to a new Disability Law, which aims to replace the current emergency regime with a permanent framework. While the government intends to cut approximately 20,000 pensions it labels as 'fraudulent' or 'ghost' benefits, the approved legislative project maintains the non-contributory pension at a floor of 70% of the minimum retirement benefit and allows for compatibility with formal employment up to two minimum wages.
