President Javier Milei urges governors to renew Pacto de Mayo at Argentina’s Independence Day ceremony

President Javier Milei addressed the traditional Independence Day vigil in San Miguel de Tucumán, marking the 210th anniversary of Argentina’s declaration of independence. Speaking to more than a dozen provincial governors, Milei called for a renewal of the “Pacto de Mayo” and praised the government’s reforms, citing the avoidance of hyperinflation, reduction of poverty, elimination of the quasi‑fiscal deficit, removal of currency controls, the RIGI investment incentive, and over 16,000 legal reforms. He highlighted the first balanced budget in a century, the Fiscal Innocence Law, labor modernization, amendments to the Glacier Law, and secured financing for debt payments due in 2026‑27, noting a sharp drop in the country’s risk rating.

Milei compared the economic transformation to General San Martín’s crossing of the Andes, calling it a “Second Independence.” Vice‑president Victoria Villarruel joined the ceremony, and Governor Osvaldo Jaldo led the local celebrations, emphasizing the popular nature of the event and later visiting a provincial sugar mill. The speech was broadcast nationally via Cadena Nacional, running into the early hours of July 9.
