Javier Milei's insults spark Brazil‑Argentina diplomatic row

Argentine President Javier Milei attended the Liberal Party (PL) convention in São Paulo that launched senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential candidacy. During the event he called Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula a “presidiário” and “ladrão” and referred to Supreme Court minister Alexandre de Moraes as “lixo careca”. The remarks prompted Brazil to summon Argentine ambassador Daniel Raimondi for explanations and to recall its ambassador in Buenos Aires, Julio Bitelli, for consultations. Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno said Argentina will not break diplomatic relations and stressed that the dispute remains political, not institutional. Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira met with Bitelli three times in a week to discuss the situation. Both governments affirmed that trade ties within Mercosur remain intact and that no diplomat will be declared persona non grata at this stage.
