Javier Milei unveils BCRA reform plan to Argentine legislators
President Javier Milei met with deputies and senators of the La Libertad Avanza bloc in the Salón Héroes de Malvinas at the Casa Rosada. In a two‑hour briefing he detailed the proposed amendment to the Carta Orgánica del Banco Central de la República Argentina (BCRA).
The reform seeks to give the central bank a single mandate – preserving the value of the currency – and to prohibit any financing of the national Treasury, including the creation of new Letras Intransferibles. It also proposes stronger governance, higher thresholds for removing the bank’s president and board, tighter limits on the distribution of profits, and harsher liability for officials who use the BCRA to fund fiscal deficits. Milei described the current 91‑year framework as a “scam” that must be ended.
Key officials present included the presidential secretary Karina Milei, chief of staff Diego Santilli, Chamber president Martín Menem, Senate leader Patricia Bullrich and block leader Gabriel Bornoroni. The president said the draft will be sent to Congress in the coming weeks for legislative treatment.
