Argentina prison vocational programs focus on social reintegration

Inmates in Mendoza and Mercedes, Argentina, are participating in various vocational training programs designed to facilitate social and labor reintegration.

In Mendoza, approximately 300 incarcerated individuals—representing 31% of the prison population—are engaged in training programs. About 240 of these participants work directly with private companies through agreements with the Penitentiary Service. Participating firms include Rerda SA, Xinca SA, Calzados Cuyo SA, Novoli, Suavipack, Grupo LTN, Agrovacs, and Akebia. These companies provide machinery, tools, and specialized knowledge in sectors such as clothing manufacturing from recycled materials, hygiene product production, and construction panel assembly. State agencies support the program by purchasing the goods produced during these workshops.

In Mercedes, Penal Unit No. 5 has launched a four-month carpentry course. The program involves 18 participants from various pavilions and includes 104 hours of instruction. Beyond skill development, the course has a social component: students will manufacture furniture to be donated to the Mercedes Community Kitchen Network to support facilities for children. Some produced items will also be used to maintain and equip the penal unit itself.
