Argentina formal employment falls as government proposes new wage floor FAST-MOVING
A report from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) indicates that Argentina has lost 241,000 formal private sector jobs since November 2023. This decline represents a 3.8% drop in formal occupation, with the industry and commerce sectors experiencing the most significant losses. The report notes that formal private employment has seen twelve consecutive months of decline, reaching levels similar to those seen in 2016.
Simultaneously, the minimum wage has suffered a 40.5% loss in purchasing power since late 2023. In response to the deteriorating economic conditions, the Argentine government, through the Secretariat of Labor, is promoting a scheme to establish a guaranteed minimum wage of approximately 1,070,000 pesos. This floor is intended to be negotiated through collective bargaining agreements between unions and business chambers rather than being set by decree, aiming to support lower-income sectors such as construction, textiles, and services without triggering significant inflation.
