Argentina private sector faces significant job losses and business closures
Argentina is experiencing a significant contraction in its formal private sector. According to reports from the Invecq consultancy, the private sector lost nearly 46,000 salaried jobs in the first half of 2026. Since the administration of Javier Milei took office in November 2023, the total loss of formal private-sector jobs is estimated at 246,300.
Data from the Integrated Social Security System (SIPA) suggests an even broader impact, with a total reduction of over 354,000 registered salaried positions. This decline in formal employment has coincided with an 8% increase in 'monotributistas' (self-employed taxpayers), indicating a shift toward informal or precarious labor. The industry, construction, and commerce sectors have been the hardest hit, accounting for a loss of approximately 93,000 jobs since June 2025.
Additionally, official data indicates a net loss of 33 companies per day in Argentina. The economic strain is visible in local communities; for instance, in Berazategui, over 1,500 people queued for several blocks to apply for just 14-15 job openings at a new restaurant, highlighting the intense competition for limited employment opportunities.
