Argentina economy shows divide between energy growth and consumer stagnation
Argentina is experiencing a bifurcated economic landscape characterized by strong growth in the energy and mining sectors contrasted with stagnant domestic consumption and rising household debt.
The Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) has significantly raised export projections for energy and mining, estimating that combined exports could exceed $51 billion by 2030. This growth is driven by the Régimen de Incentivo para Grandes Inversiones (RIGI) and increased production in Vaca Muerta. Recent regulatory changes have also facilitated foreign currency access for insurance providers related to RIGI projects.
In contrast, the domestic economy faces significant challenges. Despite decelerating inflation, mass consumption remains stalled as 78% of households report incomes below the national average of $2.8 million. Reports indicate a growing gap between macroeconomic stability and microeconomic reality. Household delinquency rates have risen sharply, with some regions reporting delinquency rates exceeding 20%, particularly in urban areas where industry and commerce are heavily impacted by reduced purchasing power.
