Argentina projects reduced social security coverage for 2027
The Argentine government has released budget projections for 2027, indicating a shift in social security coverage and retirement structures. Official projections suggest that 23.2 million people will receive assistance through various social security programs and family allowances, a decrease of approximately 27,800 beneficiaries compared to 2026. This reduction brings the system's coverage to 47.8% of the population, down from 48.4% in 2026 and 51.1% during previous administrations.
Data from ANSES indicates a projected decrease of 104,760 retirees by 2027, falling from 5,590,521 in 2026 to 5,485,761. Conversely, beneficiaries of the Universal Pension for the Elderly (PUAM) are expected to increase by over 32,000. This shift is attributed to stricter requirements for contributory pensions, as the repeal of moratoriums and increased labor informality make it harder for workers to meet the 30-year contribution requirement.
Furthermore, 2027 marks the final stage of a pension reform initiated in 2013. According to social security official Alfonso Muñoz, new rules will establish two clear paths for retirement: individuals with at least 38.5 years of contributions may retire at 65, while those with fewer contributions will face a mandatory retirement age of 67. Social security is expected to account for 67.7% of total primary expenditure in the 2027 budget.
