Argentina proposal seeks to allow pets in geriatric residences

A new initiative presented at the Argentine Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics seeks to allow elderly citizens to live with their dogs and cats when entering geriatric residences. The proposal, driven by the Sindicato de Trabajadores Caninos and its general secretary Matías Tomsich, aims to establish this as a nationwide policy to prevent the emotional trauma caused by separating seniors from their pets.

The project views pets as members of “multispecies families” and cites scientific evidence suggesting that animal companionship reduces stress, decreases medication intake, and stimulates socialization. Furthermore, a report indicated that 88% of healthcare and assistance staff approve of the measure, noting it improves the workplace climate and reduces tensions.

To avoid placing a financial burden on private or public institutions, the union is requesting that the state implement this as a public policy. This would include state-funded specialized services, such as professional walkers and trainers, to ensure the animals are properly cared for within the facilities.
