Argentina proposes rhodochrosite as National Stone

A legislative project has been introduced in Argentina to declare rhodochrosite, popularly known as ‘Rosa del Inca’, as the National Stone of the Republic. The initiative also seeks to designate the Andalgalá department in Catamarca as the National Capital of the stone.

The proposal is a joint effort between CAMYEN S.A.U., the provincial company that owns the Capillitas Mine, and National Deputy Fernanda Ávila, president of the Mining Commission of the Lower House. The project updates previous legislative attempts dating back to 2014.

Andalgalá is recognized as the primary site for gem-quality rhodochrosite extraction in Argentina. The Capillitas Mine, located at altitudes between 3,300 and 3,500 meters, features 26 kilometers of galleries across 36 mines and has a documented history of exploitation since 1856. Proponents state the law aims to formalize the region's historical, cultural, and productive identity while boosting local tourism.
