Argentina protests intensify over pension reform and Dr. Ahorro pharmacy closures

Public sector unions and teachers rallied in Buenos Aires against the government's pension reform proposal, denouncing it as a plan that would impoverish workers and warning that senators supporting the bill could see their political careers ended. The march, organized by the Multisectoral in Defence of the Caja, featured speeches from union leaders, ATE officials and municipal representatives, with chants highlighting hunger in neighbourhoods and criticism of business groups backing the reform.

At the same time, retirees marched around the Congress while police forces blocked traffic. The demonstrations also highlighted the abrupt closure of 11 Dr. Ahorro pharmacy outlets, which left more than 100 employees without pay, severance or benefits. Workers accused the Mexican‑owned chain of owing roughly $8 billion to suppliers, banks and the state, and pointed to a pattern of unpaid obligations in other Latin American operations. The closures have become another focal point of broader labour unrest as the Milei administration pushes further labour‑market changes.
