Argentina provinces debate land law and territorial sovereignty

Provinces in Argentina are debating land law reforms and their impact on territorial sovereignty and foreign ownership. In Salta, Minister of Government and Justice Ignacio Jarsún defended Governor Gustavo Sáenz's position against federal changes to the land regime. Jarsún emphasized that the stance is a "defense of the territory" rather than a political confrontation with President Javier Milei, noting that the issue involves natural resources and strategic border zones.

In Catamarca, provincial deputy Mamerto Acuña has raised concerns regarding the historical context of land ownership. He highlighted a 1985 operation involving the transfer of approximately 1.2 million hectares in the Catamarca Cordillera, which included international passes and strategic sectors. Acuña also noted that despite National Law 26.737, which aimed to limit foreign acquisition of rural land, Catamarca remains among the jurisdictions with high levels of foreign-owned rural land, recorded at 8.2% in official registries.
