Argentina ramps up trichinosis prevention measures

New cases of trichinosis were confirmed in Argentina's Córdoba province and in the Bahía Blanca area of Buenos Aires province. Inspections in Malvinas Argentinas, Córdoba led to the seizure of about twelve pigs that failed sanitary standards, while a veterinary laboratory identified two positive samples – one from pigs in Puán and another from a wild boar near Santa Rosa, La Pampa. Authorities stressed that the disease can be transmitted through undercooked pork or meat from infected wildlife and warned that curing, drying, smoking or freezing does not guarantee safety.

The municipal Bromatology office in Nueve de Julio announced free testing for trichinosis, requiring 100 g of refrigerated entrails to be submitted by Wednesday. Officials urged consumers to purchase only labeled sausages and cured meats produced by certified facilities and to avoid cheap, unlabeled or homemade products. They highlighted the importance of rigorous sanitary controls during the peak season of household butchering and homemade charcuterie.

Health officials reiterated that while the risk is not a cause for alarm, heightened vigilance and proper meat analysis are essential to prevent infection.
