Argentina reports record influenza cases in a decade

Argentina has recorded its highest number of influenza cases in a decade, with 790,523 infections reported during the first 30 weeks of 2026. This figure surpasses the totals from both 2025 and 2024.

The surge is driven by the circulation of the A(H3N2) influenza variant, specifically the K subclade, which has been colloquially termed the ‘super flu’. According to the Malbrán Institute, this subclade accounted for approximately 96% of the analyzed samples. The outbreak was characterized by an early onset, with a significant peak occurring between weeks 21 and 22.

The epidemiological impact has been particularly severe among children. Minors under the age of 10 accounted for 48% of all cases, with 35% of those being children under 2 years old. Other affected groups include those aged 10 to 19 (18%) and adults over 60 (11%).

Medical experts, including Eduardo López from the Ricardo Gutiérrez Children's Hospital, noted that the virus arrived earlier than usual, causing a significant outbreak in the pediatric population. While early vaccination efforts helped mitigate severe cases, health officials continue to emphasize the importance of immunization to prevent hospitalizations.
