Argentina records historic high in syphilis cases

Argentina has recorded a historic high in syphilis cases, ending 2025 with 46,799 notifications. According to official data from the Argentine Ministry of Health, this represents 117.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The infection is heavily concentrated among younger populations, with individuals aged 15 to 39 accounting for 76% of all diagnoses (35,497 cases). The highest incidence rate was observed in the 20 to 24 age group, reaching 290.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Geographically, the highest incidence was recorded in the South (159.8 per 100,000), followed by the Cuyo region (137.5) and the Northeast (133). While increased testing and improved epidemiological surveillance may contribute to the rising numbers, authorities acknowledge a higher circulation of the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
