Argentina national government reduces Remediar drug program coverage
The Argentine national government has significantly restructured the Remediar program, reducing the number of essential medicines provided through the national scheme from 128 to just six. Under Resolution 1447/26, the initiative is being reconverted into the National Vascular Health Plan 2026-2030, focusing primarily on cardiovascular treatments such as hypertension and high cholesterol.
The reduction leaves many common medications without national coverage, including those for diabetes (metformin), thyroid issues (levothyroxine), respiratory conditions (salbutamol), infections (amoxicillin), and reproductive health (contraceptives). Consequently, provincial governments must now use their own resources to finance and acquire these essential drugs.
In La Rioja, the provincial health plan reported that the reduction affects 100 health centers and previously covered approximately 360,000 prescriptions annually. In Santa Fe, the provincial government has announced a significant investment to mitigate the deficit caused by the federal withdrawal. Meanwhile, in La Pampa, the government is advancing the digitalization of health services by implementing electronic prescriptions across 122 medical establishments to streamline medication access.
