Argentina reduces Remediar essential medicine list from 128 to 6 drugs

The Argentine Ministry of Health has issued Resolution 1447/2026, significantly reducing the list of essential medicines distributed through the Remediar program. The previous list of 128 medications has been replaced by only six active ingredients focused on cardiovascular health: acetylsalicylic acid, atorvastatin, candesartan, hydrochlorothiazide, ramipril, and rosuvastatin.

This decision replaces the 2021 vademecum and transitions the program into the National Vascular Health Plan 2026-2030. Consequently, many common treatments—including those for diabetes (metformin), thyroid issues (levothyroxine), infections (amoxicillin), respiratory conditions (salbutamol), and reproductive health—will no longer be covered by the national distribution.

Provincial governments are now responsible for funding the purchase of the remaining essential medicines using their own resources. In response, the province of Misiones announced it will allocate 1.2 billion pesos monthly to cover the gap. Meanwhile, the provinces of Córdoba and various municipalities in Buenos Aires have expressed concern, warning that the reduction will overburden primary care centers and regional hospitals.
