Argentina reduces Remediar program medication list from 128 to 6

The Argentine Ministry of Health, led by Mario Lugones, has significantly reduced the number of essential medicines provided through the Remediar program. The national list has been cut from 128 drugs to just six, all of which are focused on cardiovascular prevention and treatment: acetylsalicylic acid, atorvastatin, candesartan, hydrochlorothiazide, ramipril, and rosuvastatin.

This decision repeals the 2021 essential medicines list, removing widely used treatments such as amoxicillin, metformin, levothyroxine, salbutamol, contraceptives, fluconazole, and loratadine from national coverage. Consequently, provinces must now use their own resources to purchase these excluded medications.

In Tierra del Fuego, Health Minister Judit Di Giglio reported that the reduction has placed increased economic pressure on the provincial health system, requiring approximately $1.1 billion pesos per month to maintain pharmacological care for those relying on the state system.
