Argentina reforms food industry regulations via Decree 697/2026

Argentina has implemented significant reforms to the food industry regulations through Decree 697/2026. The measure aims to streamline regulatory procedures for the production, import, and export of food products in accordance with the Argentine Food Code (CAA).

For imports, the reform allows for the recognition of foreign certifications from specific countries or systems based on Codex Alimentarius standards. This enables importers to utilize sworn declarations for products with certificates of free sale, exempting them from certain CAA requirements. The scope covers food, additives, ingredients, and food-contact materials, excluding medicinal or therapeutic products.

Regarding exports, products must only meet the requirements of the destination country, preventing national sanitary authorities from imposing additional constraints. Institutionally, SENASA will centralize control, registration, and inspection of food imports, while the Ministry of Health retains normative functions.
