Argentina formal employment and business numbers decline
Argentina is experiencing a significant contraction in its formal labor market. Official data from the Sistema Integrado Previsional Argentino (SIPA) and the Superintendencia de Riesgos del Trabajo (SRT) indicate that registered employment fell for the third consecutive month in May 2026. Over the last twelve months, approximately 110,000 registered jobs have been lost.
The decline is primarily concentrated in the private sector, which has seen a continuous downward trend for a year. While growth in the 'monotributo' (self-employed) and domestic worker sectors has provided a slight buffer, analysts note this reflects a shift toward more precarious employment. Additionally, the country has seen a sharp decline in business activity, with over 30,000 companies closing since the start of the current administration.
Economic sectors such as manufacturing, commerce, and construction are among the hardest hit. Real wages have also faced pressure, with reports indicating a decline in purchasing power compared to late 2023 levels.
