Argentina reinstates ‘Día del Niño’ name by decree
The Argentine government has officially reinstated the name ‘Día del Niño’ (Children’s Day) for the annual celebration held on the third Sunday of August. This change was enacted via Decree 562/2025 under the administration of President Javier Milei.
The decree reverses a 2020 decision by the then-National Secretariat for Children, Adolescence, and Family (SENAF), which had introduced the terms ‘Día de las Infancias’ (Day of Infancy/Childhoods) or ‘Día de la Niñez’ (Day of Childhood) to promote diversity and inclusive perspectives.
The administration’s move aligns with its broader policy stance regarding gender issues and the use of inclusive language. While the name is returning to its historical designation, the date of the celebration remains unchanged. The decision has faced criticism from social organizations and human rights groups, who view the reversal as a setback for the inclusive perspectives established in 2020.
