Argentina restores traditional
President Javier Milei has signed Decree 562/2025 to officially restore the traditional name "Día del Niño" (Children's Day) for the annual August celebration in Argentina. This measure reverts the terminology used in recent years, such as "Día de las Infancias" (Day of the Infancies), which was promoted in 2020 by the National Secretariat of Children, Adolescence and Family to promote a more diverse perspective of childhood.
The decree fixes the official celebration for the third Sunday of August each year. For 2026, the date will fall on Sunday, August 16. While the name has changed, the timing remains consistent with the schedule established in 2013, which was designed to provide predictability for families and the toy industry.
Historically, the date has undergone various shifts due to social changes and commercial requests from the toy sector. The restoration of the traditional name has reignited cultural and symbolic debates regarding how the state refers to children and the diversity of their experiences.
