Argentina removes federal judge Alfredo López for antisemitic posts

The Jury of Magistrate Impeachment has removed Alfredo López, a federal judge in Mar del Plata, from his position due to antisemitic posts on the social media platform X. The decision was based on a finding of 'malperformance of duties' following a series of discriminatory messages directed at the Jewish community and the State of Israel.

The jury determined that López’s conduct was not an isolated incident but a systematic pattern of offensive expressions that violated the principles of impartiality, decorum, and public trust required of a federal magistrate. While López defended his actions as protected by freedom of expression and claimed 'ideological persecution,' the tribunal ruled that his public conduct, exercised under his judicial investiture, was incompatible with his professional obligations.

The removal process proceeded after the Executive Power declined to accept López’s resignation following a report from the Accusation Commission. The plenary of the Council of the Magistracy, led by Supreme Court President Horacio Rosatti, referred the case to the Jury for impeachment.
