Argentina removes Russia Today and Telesur from digital TV

The Argentine government has removed the international news channels Russia Today and Telesur from the Open Digital Television (TDA) platform. Official sources stated the removal was due to the non-renewal of transmission contracts. The government notified the state-owned satellite company Arsat to cease uploading the signals to avoid incurring costs for unrenewed agreements.

While the contract for Russia Today had expired in 2022, the channel had continued to broadcast on the TDA grid until now. The removal of Telesur follows a period of heightened diplomatic tension between President Javier Milei and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. In May 2024, the Milei administration had already signaled its intent to terminate the agreement with the Venezuelan-based channel by July 1.

The decision comes amid verbal escalations between the two leaders, with Milei referring to Maduro as a dictator. Maduro has responded by suggesting the removal of the channel is motivated by fear of Telesur.
