Argentina rental costs surge amid rising inflation

Rental costs in Argentina are rising significantly faster than general inflation, placing heavy pressure on household budgets. In the Northeast region (NEA), rental prices surged by 69.4% over the last twelve months, far exceeding the regional inflation rate of 36.9%. This makes the NEA the second region in the country with the highest rental increases, following only Patagonia.

In La Plata, the housing crisis is particularly acute for low-income earners. According to a municipal report, the average cost for a one-bedroom apartment including building fees is approximately $620,238 per month. For individuals earning the national minimum wage (SMVM), this cost represents 172.6% of their total income. Similarly, retirees receiving the minimum pension must allocate 132.4% of their income to housing, while primary school teachers spend 74.4% of their net salary on a single-room studio apartment.
