Argentina reopens mountain highways to ski resorts and Patagonia routes amid snow safety warnings

On July 28, Argentine authorities opened the high‑altitude stretch of National Route 7 for private vehicles and tourist transport to the Los Puquios and Penitentes ski parks. The reopening depends on weather and road conditions; drivers must carry chains, follow police and gendarmerie instructions, and heed recommendations on clothing, supplies and hydration. Safety checks will be conducted by local police, the National Gendarmerie, and municipal guards.

National Route 259 linking Esquel and Trevelin was also reopened after severe snowfalls. Although traffic can resume, the road remains hazardous with ice, snow, fog, strong winds and possible wildlife. Officials advise against night travel, require chains for all vehicles, and urge reduced speeds and distance. Maintenance crews continue snow clearing and salting operations under the Winter Maintenance Plan.
