Gender-based violence crisis reported in Argentina and Spain

Reports indicate a persistent and severe crisis of gender-based violence in Argentina and Spain. In Argentina, the Observatorio de las Violencias de Género reported 147 deaths due to gender violence between the start of the year and August 1, 2026. This includes 119 direct femicides, with approximately 60% of attacks perpetrated by current or former partners.

In Spain, the Ministry of Equality is moving its next crisis committee to Andalusia in September due to the region's high rates of gender-based killings. Andalusia accounts for 27.77% of the total fatal victims in Spain this year. Recent confirmed murders in Asturias, Murcia, and Málaga have brought the national total for 2026 to 36 women killed by partners or ex-partners.

In Argentina, concerns have been raised regarding the dismantling of national programs for the prevention and care of victims, shifting responsibility to provincial and municipal authorities. Additionally, data shows that false reports of gender violence remain statistically insignificant, at approximately 0.09% of criminal cases.
