Argentina suicide rates reach record high in 2025
Argentina has reached a record high in suicide rates, with 5,209 recorded cases in 2025. This represents a 22.6% increase compared to 2024 and a 57.6% increase since 2017. The national suicide rate has risen to 11.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Data from the National Criminal Information System (SNIC) indicates that suicide is now the leading cause of death for individuals aged 15 to 34, surpassing road accidents. This demographic represents approximately 45% of the total victims recorded in recent years.
Experts from the Criminal Policy Observatory note a structural shift in violence, moving from interpersonal violence (homicides) to personal violence (suicides). In 2025, the suicide rate was more than three times higher than the intentional homicide rate of 3.6 per 100,000 inhabitants. Factors cited include economic instability, debt, social isolation, and substance abuse.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the mental health budget, with reports indicating that only 31.2% of the allocated funds were executed in 2025. Regional disparities exist, with Entre Ríos recording a significantly higher rate of 20.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.
