Argentina reports record syphilis cases amid rising transmission

Argentina has reported its highest level of syphilis cases since the start of national epidemiological surveillance. In 2025, the country recorded 46,779 cases, marking a 75.6% increase compared to 2022.

Health experts at the 26th International AIDS Conference warned that the infection often remains asymptomatic, which facilitates undetected transmission. This trend aligns with a broader regional increase in the Americas, where new diagnoses rose from 3.37 million in 2022 to 4.2 million in 2024.

In response to rising transmission rates, the Ministry of Public Health of Tucumán has formalized a technical cooperation agreement with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The partnership aims to implement the ETMI Plus strategy, an initiative designed to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and Chagas disease through improved diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for pregnant individuals and newborns.
