Argentina faces demographic shifts as birth rates plummet

Argentina is experiencing significant demographic and economic shifts. In the Province of Buenos Aires, birth rates have seen a sharp decline. Data from the Observatorio de Datos Estratégicos shows that live births dropped by 28.7% between 2019 and 2023, falling from 227,596 to 162,380. This downward trend continued through 2024 and 2025, with a further 5.3% reduction recorded between those two years. This decline affects 126 of the 135 municipalities in the province, with some areas like Coronel Rosales seeing drops exceeding 50%.

Nationally, birth rates have also trended downward; in Mendoza and San Rafael, births decreased by nearly half over the last decade.

Economic indicators also show strain. In the Gran Rosario region, 14.3% of employed individuals are seeking second jobs due to insufficient wages, a figure driven by loss of purchasing power rather than lack of employment. Additionally, reports on public employment indicate varying levels of state reliance across provincial capitals. In Formosa, there are 95 public sector workers per 1,000 inhabitants, compared to a national average of 84. Other cities show extremes, such as Río Gallegos with 223 workers per 1,000 inhabitants and Córdoba with only 38.
