Argentina reports rising syphilis cases and declining condom use

On World Sexual Health Day, September 4, health professionals in Argentina are raising alarms regarding a significant rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and a decline in condom use.

In 2025, Argentina recorded 46,799 cases of syphilis, the highest figure to date. In the first part of 2026, 32,377 cases have already been confirmed. Data indicates that only 15% of Argentines use condoms regularly, a figure that drops to just 5% among adolescents. While the highest incidence is concentrated among those aged 15 to 39, experts warn that risk is not limited to youth. Adults re-entering the dating scene after long-term relationships often experience a decreased perception of risk or difficulty negotiating condom use.

Beyond syphilis, the Ministry of Health estimates that approximately 140,000 people are living with HIV in Argentina, with roughly 13% unaware of their diagnosis. Health experts emphasize that sexual health encompasses more than pregnancy prevention, including reproductive health, HPV prevention, and access to comprehensive sexual education and care.
