Argentina records 176 femicides in first eight months of 2026

Argentina has recorded 176 femicides between January 1 and August 31, 2026, according to a report by the Observatorio Mujeres de la Matria Latinoamericana (MuMaLá). This frequency equates to one gender-based killing every 33 hours, a rate that exceeds the totals from the previous year.

Data indicates that the highest femicide rates are concentrated in the provinces of Santiago del Estero, Santa Fe, and Catamarca. The average age of victims is 39 years. In terms of weaponry, firearms were used in 32% of the cases, followed by knives at 24%.

The report highlights significant failures in state protection. Only 11% of victims had filed legal complaints prior to the crimes. Furthermore, 75% of those who had sought justice were already under active restraining orders, and 12% possessed panic buttons at the time of the attacks. MuMaLá has called for the restoration of national budgets and functional structures to ensure the right to live without fear.
