Argentina reports surge in trichinosis cases, health probes launched

In Buenos Aires Province, the number of trichinosis cases rose sharply, with 331 suspected infections reported for the week of 12‑18 July 2026 – up from 91 in the same period a year earlier – and 212 confirmed cases. Provincial deputy Valentín Miranda (UCR) presented a legislative request demanding detailed reports from the Ministry of Development Agrario on control, inspection and epidemiological measures, including actions taken in pig farms, slaughterhouses, processed‑meat facilities and a prison outbreak.

In the neighboring province of San Luis, health authorities are investigating ten suspected trichinosis cases within a single family that consumed homemade pork products lacking sanitary certification. Preliminary tests detected forms compatible with *Trichinella spiralis* larvae, and samples have been sent to the National Reference Laboratory for confirmation. The provincial Ministry of Health has issued warnings to avoid raw or undercooked pork and to ensure proper testing of home‑slaughtered animals.
