Argentina restores avian‑influenza‑free status, bolstering poultry exports

Argentina's National Service of Agri‑Food Health (SENASA) announced that the country regained its status as free of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in April 2026, after the virus was first detected in February 2026. The declaration also reaffirms Argentina's freedom from Newcastle disease, a major threat to poultry production.

The regained status unlocks trade negotiations and supports the continuation of poultry exports to more than 75 international markets. Export continuity is backed by strict bio‑security measures, including zoning, compartmentalisation and routine farm inspections, which allow healthy flocks to be shipped even from regions with localized outbreaks.

Poultry production remains heavily concentrated in the provinces of Entre Ríos and Buenos Buenos Aires, which together host about 80 % of the sector’s facilities. The industry is a key source of employment and a growing source of animal protein for the domestic market, while its sanitary credibility underpins Argentina’s broader agricultural export stability.
