Argentina retail sales drop in April amid weakened consumer spending

Retail sales in Argentina contracted in April 2026, falling 3.8% year‑on‑year and marking a 3.3% decline over the first four months of the year, according to data from consultancy Scentia. All traditional channels recorded negative growth; supermarkets posted a 4.5% drop both YoY and month‑on‑month, while independent self‑service stores, kiosks and wholesalers saw declines of 2.2% to 4.8%.

The steepest falls were in impulse products such as confectionery (‑12%) and perishable foods (‑7.8%). The only categories with positive performance were alcoholic and non‑alcoholic beverages, which rose up to 6.7%. E‑commerce was the sole bright spot, expanding 40.4% YoY and accounting for 60.7% of online sales, while pharmacies recorded a modest 0.1% increase. Food prices rose 1.5% in April, still below the 2.6% monthly inflation rate reported by INDEC.
