Argentina: Retiree centers provide support amid economic challenges
In Argentina, local community centers and municipal leaders are addressing the challenges faced by the elderly amid economic difficulties. The Amigos de Yapeyú Retiree Center in Barrio Yapeyú operates as an independent, non-profit association, relying solely on minimal membership fees to provide social support and mental stimulation. The center offers various workshops, including neurocognitive training led by specialists to improve attention, orientation, and language skills, as well as nutrition, yoga, and theater.
In La Matanza, Mayor Fernando Espinoza highlighted the importance of retiree centers as spaces for social inclusion during a large gathering in González Catán. Espinoza criticized the current economic situation, noting that many pensioners must choose between food and medication. He emphasized local government initiatives, such as free eyeglasses programs and health services, as essential support systems for the elderly population.
