Argentina retirees protest pension cuts as PAMI sustains free medication in July

Retirees in Buenos Aires continued their weekly gatherings at the Plaza de los miércoles, demanding higher pensions, proper functioning of the public health insurer PAMI and uninterrupted access to medicines. The protests featured masks bearing Lionel Messi’s face and slogans that accuse the Milei government of fraud, with community groups providing food and solidarity. Participants also called for the release of detained activists protesting labor reforms.

In parallel, PAMI announced that for July it will keep 100% free coverage for about 160 medicines used to treat complex and chronic conditions, and will maintain discounts on outpatient drugs subject to eligibility requirements. The announcement provides short‑term stability for pensioners with limited incomes, though concerns remain about the long‑term sustainability of the scheme.
