Cuba faces massive power outages affecting 68% of the island
Cuba is facing a severe energy crisis, with the state utility Unión Eléctrica (UNE) projecting that power outages could affect up to 68% of the island during peak demand hours. The country faces a massive electricity deficit of approximately 2,210 megawatts, as generation capacity is estimated at only 1,090 megawatts against a demand exceeding 3,300 megawatts.
The crisis is driven by several factors, including the fact that seven of the 16 thermoelectric generation units are currently out of service due to maintenance or breakdowns. Additionally, the utility noted that the period between September and December may see further instability as more units undergo corrective maintenance. The government has also attributed some difficulties to U.S. sanctions, which impact the procurement of necessary parts and fuel.
In response to the prolonged outages, residents in Cienfuegos have staged protests at the Provincial Government headquarters. Demonstrators, including many women and families, have demanded solutions to the frequent interruptions that affect food preservation, medicine access, and basic living conditions.
