Argentina's debt and morosity surge as digital refinancing launches

Banco de la Nación Argentina introduced a 100 % digital, self‑service refinancing platform for credit‑card debt in 2026. The service recorded more than 7,500 operations in its first 24 hours and, for the year, the bank refinanced over 62,000 debts amounting to more than $310 billion.

Across the country, household morosity reached record levels. The private‑sector delinquency rate hit 7.6 % in May 2026, the highest in two decades. Bank‑related morosity rose from 2.5 % in October 2024 to 12.3 % in May 2026, while fintech‑wallet delinquency jumped from 7.3 % to 29.6 % over the same period. About 5.8 million Argentines were classified as irregular debtors, including nearly 4 million retirees. The proportion of pensioners in arrears tripled to 11.4 % (≈458 000 people). Similar spikes were reported in Chaco (172 k morose) and Buenos Aires province (18.6 % morosity). Average debt per morose exceeds three million pesos.

Regional responses include Santa Fe deputy Gisel Mahmud’s proposal for a consumer‑protection code aimed at over‑indebted families, and legislators highlighting the crisis. The debt burden is linked to a 19 % loss in real pension value since late 2023 and a growing reliance on credit for basic consumption.
