Argentina's World Cup semifinal celebrations trigger injuries, arrests and police actions

Massive celebrations erupted across Argentina after the national team defeated England 2‑1 to reach the World Cup final. Hundreds of thousands gathered in cities such as Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Corrientes, Necochea, Quequén, Santa Fe, Rosario, San Pedro, Cipolletti and others. Police deployed large security devices, including hundreds of officers, helicopters, crowd‑control equipment and rapid‑response units to manage the crowds.

The events were marked by numerous incidents: dozens of people were injured by falls, fights and weapon‑related wounds; several arrests were made for public disorder, illegal weapons and alcohol‑related offenses; robberies were reported in Rosario’s downtown; and a municipal cleanup in Santa Fe collected over 3.8 tonnes of waste. In Córdoba, nearly 80 detainees were taken during the celebrations, while in Cipolletti a 24‑year‑old was arrested with two loaded firearms. The City Legislature in Buenos Aires has requested a detailed report on the police operation at the Obelisco, including use of force, costs and detentions.

Overall, the celebrations highlighted both the nationwide euphoria over the football achievement and the challenges for public safety authorities in handling large, spontaneous gatherings.
