Argentina sees rise in gender‑based violence complaints

Police officials in Argentina reported an increase in gender‑based violence complaints, attributing the rise to greater willingness of victims to come forward. The Gender and Family Police Division, led by Luciana Valeria Aguirre, explained that complaints now come from a broader age range, including adolescents and seniors.

Victims are initially received at the police station, where an interdisciplinary team provides legal advice and protective measures such as restraining orders, home exclusion of the aggressor, temporary financial assistance and monitoring systems. After filing, cases are forwarded to the competent court, which often issues precautionary orders within 24 hours.

Aguirre emphasized that anyone who learns of gender‑based violence can file a report, and highlighted the coordination with state agencies to offer temporary shelter for victims lacking a safe place.
