Argentina selects Sanagasta and Tafí del Valle for UNWTO Best Tourism Villages 2026

The rural town of Sanagasta in La Rioja province was chosen as one of eight Argentine villages to represent the country in the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s Best Tourism Villages 2026 program. Selected from 52 entries submitted by 19 provinces, Sanagasta was highlighted for its rich paleontological sites, including a geological park and dinosaur nests, as well as its wine production, artisanal crafts and cultural festivals.

Tafí del Valle in Tucumán province also secured a place among the eight national representatives, marking the first time a locality from the province has been nominated. The town was selected from 56 candidates after a technical national jury evaluated factors such as natural landscapes, cultural traditions, gastronomy and sustainable tourism practices. With a population of about 8,800 residents and an altitude of 1,976 m, Tafí del Valle was praised for its mountainous scenery, historic archaeology and community hospitality. Both villages will compete internationally for the 2026 Best Tourism Villages distinction, which aims to promote sustainable rural development and global visibility for selected destinations.
