Argentina Senate: Justicialist block gains member to secure minority status
The Justicialist block in the Argentine Senate has increased its membership to 22 following the addition of Senator Fernando Rejal from La Rioja. Rejal, who had previously left the Unión por la Patria faction due to disagreements with the leadership of Cristina Kirchner, has rejoined the block presided over by José Mayans.
This shift is strategically significant for the upcoming selection of representatives to the Council of the Magistracy. By increasing its numbers, the Justicialist block aims to secure its position as the first minority, potentially allowing it to claim two of the four Senate seats on the Council. This move places the block ahead of the La Libertad Avanza party, which currently holds 20 members following the death of Juan Carlos Pagotto.
The composition of the Council of the Magistracy is determined by the size of the individual blocks rather than inter-block configurations. The current leadership of the Justicialist block seeks to leverage this numerical advantage to influence the judicial oversight body during the upcoming renewal process in late November.
