Argentina Senate proposes 50% cut in fuel taxes

A bill introduced in the Argentine Senate seeks to halve the national tax levy on gasoline and diesel. The proposal, presented by Senator José María Carambi, would maintain a differentiated tax regime for the Patagonian south while applying a 50 percent reduction to the fuel tax rate for the rest of the country.

The draft law also calls for updating fuel taxes every three months, with any increase capped at 15 percent, and requires each change to be announced through an administrative act detailing criteria and estimated impact. Supporters, including Carlos Pinto, president of the Chamber of Fuel Retailers for Río Negro and Neuquén, argue that the tax cut would lower consumer prices, stimulate commercial activity, improve regional competitiveness, and benefit transport, logistics and the broader cost of living.
